Gum Disease

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is inflammation of the gums that support and surround your teeth. The inflammation is a result of bacterial growth caused by plaque. You may of been told you have Gum Disease, it sometimes referred to as Gingivitis, Periodontitis or Advanced Periodontitis.

If untreated, Gum Disease may eventually infect your bone that support your teeth, causing your teeth to become loose and may even fall out.  It may also lead to some serious health issues. Gum Disease can be painful, your gums become swollen, they bleed and you may suffer with bad breath.

Mild Gum Disease:

Gingivitis is known as mild Gum Disease, it refers to the inflammation of the gum line caused by the build-up of plaque. The signs of Gingivitis include:

  • Sore Gums
  • Soft Gums
  • Swollen Gums
  • Bleeding Gums.

If you notice blood in your mouth when brushing or flossing this is gingivitis. At this stage damage to your Gums, Teeth and Bone caused by  gingivitis can be prevented and is reversible. Keeping up a good oral hygiene routine is paramount, if ignored it may to Advanced Gum Disease.

Advanced Gum Disease:

Referred to as Periodontitis by Dental Professionals occurs when the gum inflammation becomes infected and affects the bones and tissues that support your teeth. This may results in loose teeth that may eventually fall out.

Common signs of periodontitis are:

  • Receding gums
  • Pockets between your teeth and gum
  • Pain while chewing.
