Laser Teeth Whitening Treatment
For decades, whitening treatments utilising hydrogen-peroxide lifted stains but required several treatments to achieve notable results. Nowadays, technology has sped up the treatment significantly with the use of lasers to activate the solution and trigger a chemical reaction that lightens teeth in half the time.
Zoom teeth whitening is by far the most commonly known laser whitening treatment and is a process whereby 25% hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth before an ultraviolet light is shone to activate the solution.
About Zoom Whitening
Philips Zoom is a teeth whitening brand that is only offered in-office or inside the clinic. It claims to brighten discoloured or stained teeth within an hour. All you have to do is undergo the teeth whitening procedure in the dentist’s chair, relax for an hour, and voila – your teeth are noticeably whiter.
What stands Zoom out from other in-office whitening techniques is predominantly its speed. It has also adjusted its peroxide gel to be gentler and less prone to the well-known side effect of tooth sensitivity that occurs in the majority of dental whitening treatments.
The magic of ultraviolet light
The success of Zoom teeth whitening from its whitening or bleaching gel is attributed to the use of ultraviolet when all said and done. Just enough light is shone to make your tooth enamel gleam with brightness. It works in a similar fashion to the way that lemon juice, when applied to your hair, is activated by the power of sunshine to bleach your hair. Ultraviolet works like magic as your teeth are cocooned in the bleaching gel solution.
8 Shades Whiter
Zoom teeth whitening can also lighten your teeth by up to 8 shades. It’s also far more predictable than a home-based whitening treatment such as whitening strips since the procedure is supervised by a dental professional. Your dentist understands the product and won’t make any errors when applying the gel, so you can be sure that your teeth will end up becoming up to 8 shades lighter, or at least a few shades lighter.
It all depends on your particular circumstances and what caused the tooth discolouration in the first place.
What to Expect During the Zoom Teeth Whitening Procedure
At the start of the teeth whitening procedure, an impression will be taken of your teeth so that we can create custom trays for your teeth that you can use later at home (more on that later).
You’ll be provided with protective eye-wear to put on during the whitening treatment and a device will be set up inside your mouth to protect your gums from the strong hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel.
Our dentist carefully applies the gel to your teeth while you are sitting in the dentist’s chair. During the teeth whitening procedure a special handpiece is used that dispels laser light over a broader area of the teeth to activate the bleaching gel. As the hydrogen peroxide starts to break down, oxygen enters the tooth enamel and the dentin beneath, bleaching and lifting away the stains, without harming the structure and surface of the teeth.
The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation and your teeth are checked periodically, with more bleach being added where necessary to ensure you get the brightest and best results possible. Towards the end of the teeth whitening treatment, you may feel a little discomfort as your teeth react to the high concentration of the hydrogen peroxide. Once the treatment is over, a sensitivity-reducing gel is applied to your teeth.
You’re free to leave the clinic sporting a whiter smile and a beam from ear to ear.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Zoom Teeth Whitening?
You may be an eligible candidate for Zoom teeth whitening if you fulfil the following requirements otherwise, you may prefer to look into alternative methods of cosmetic dentistry or tooth restoration to achieve a whiter smile.
- Non restored teeth with no fillings and healthy gums – The trouble with restorations is that while bleaching gel can whiten tooth enamel it won’t change the colour of any restorations or fillings. Your gums should also be healthy or else the whitening treatment is likely to exacerbate gums that are sensitive from existing disease and ongoing infection.
- If you have sensitive teeth – You could be pushing your luck if you choose to have teeth whitening treatment knowing you have sensitive teeth. That said, our dentist can control the level of laser light energy to make your experience with Zoom teeth whitening more comfortable.
Women that are breastfeeding or pregnant are also advised to refrain from teeth whitening. While this is a grey area with little research to show that whitening treatment could be dangerous under these conditions, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
If you’re longing for a whiter, brighter smile then we can help you achieve this with Zoom teeth whitening. Why not book a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate and take the first step to a healthier-looking more confident smile.
