Crooked & Misaligned Teeth
What causes teeth to be misaligned?
Misaligned teeth are the incorrect relation between the upper and lower teeth when they come into contact. This could be due to several factors such as:
- Hereditary
- Airway issues
- Habits such as thumb sucking or anterior tongue thrust
Consequences & Treatment of misaligned teeth:
Cosmetic: This is classified as cosmetic orthodontic treatment, meaning we are only focusing on aligning teeth for appearance purposes. Options for this treatment include Clear Correct, Invisalign and Fast Braces (Ceramic braces).
Health: When teeth are crooked and crowded, this makes it a lot harder to keep them clean. This in turn increases your chances of decay and gum disease which can cause tooth loss. Aligning the teeth allows easy access for the toothbrush bristles to clean as well as making flossing much easier.
Function: When teeth are misaligned, this can then affect the positioning of the jaw and in turn contribute to TMD (temporomandibular dysfunction) which can then affect the way in which a person speaks and chews. This treatment will allocate both orthodontic and orthopaedic treatment.
