Putting a smile on your child’s face
“We extract for the Face, not for the Space’. Years ago, the solution for crowding was to extract healthy adult teeth followed by the use of braces to reposition the remaining teeth into alignment. As a child’s facial bones are still growing, at Infinity Dental Care Winston Hills, we are face focused and will try and minimize extraction orthodontics and focus on helping facial development.
If it’s suspected that adult teeth may not come through straight, it may be possible to guide them into the correct position even before they emerge. It’s common, for example, for the upper or lower jaw to be too small to accommodate all of the emerging teeth.
Early orthodontic intervention takes advantage of the fact that a child’s jaw is still growing. A device called a palatal expander may be used to enlarge your child’s jaw. Once the arch is the optimal size there is a much greater chance their adult teeth will emerge where they should.
Children who undergo orthopaedic orthodontics may still need braces, retainers or other appliances later, but this pre-treatment may reduce the severity of the problem. You could possibly avoid extraction of their adult teeth in the future and significantly reduce the amount of time needed in fixed braces.
