Gummy Smiles

Enhancing your smile
by showing your teeth
Crown lengthening is a common procedure to remove gum and bone, or both. It is a treatment for people who have what is called a ‘gummy smile’ or when not enough tooth is exposed above the gum line for a crown or filling to be placed.
The procedure is completed by Dr Jack under local anesthetic and a small incision will allow for the removal of a very small portion of gum from the tooth. This will expose the roots of the teeth and the surrounding bone. In some cases, removing only a small amount of gum tissue will expose enough teeth for a crown or filling to be placed.
In many cases, Dr Jack will need to remove or reshape some of the underlying bone from around the roots of the teeth. Once enough tooth is exposed the area is sterilized and the gums are stitched together. In some severe cases, orthodontic treatment in combination with oral surgery may be required.
Depending on your personal circumstance and procedure, your gums may take up to three months to heal fully. Dr Jack will discuss this will you in detail at your assessment appointment.
