Frequent snacking as well as the choice of foods and drinks you consume affect oral health significantly. Acidic foods and drinks can ‘erode’ enamel from teeth if consumed too regularly or sipped over a long period of time and held in the mouth.
Healthy foods rich in calcium and iron, like milk, cheese and meat as well as crunchy foods like apples, pears, carrots and celery sticks are good for strengthening tooth enamel. They also contribute to reducing plaque and tartar build-up and the development of cavities.
Your saliva also plays a very important role in the prevention of cavities. It contains anti-bacterial properties and is the body’s natural defence against tooth decay, constantly washing away acids and replenishing minerals in teeth. Drinking fluoridated water after a snack helps to quickly neutralise the acid from sugary soft and sports drinks plus snacks like lollies, chocolate, cakes and biscuits, which can adhere to the surface of your teeth for some time after eating them.
But don’t despair, you don’t have to eliminate all your favourite treats and drinks that can affect your teeth. Even small dietary changes, such as drinking more fluoridated water after snacks and substituting some more ‘tooth-friendly’ choices in your diet each day can make a big difference.
