Why A Tooth Becomes Infected
There are several causes of tooth infection with one of the most common being an ageing root canal. When a dentist performs a root canal, decayed tooth tissue is removed from the affected tooth, along with the nerve. Unfortunately, if some of the infection is left behind, or the filling or crown that is placed on it cracks, bacteria can grow in that area and lead to further infection.
It’s important to recognize if you have a tooth infection so you can seek treatment.
Tooth Infection Symptoms
The signs and symptoms to look out for include:
- Pain when you’re eating
- Swelling of the face, jaw, and lymph nodes
- Your tooth has turned a darker color
- Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
- Your gums are swollen and filled with pus
- You feel generally under the weather and, if the tooth infection is severe, you may develop a fever
- Difficulty moving or opening your mouth
How We Treat An Infected Tooth
There are several ways we can treat an infected tooth. One way is with a root canal. Even if the infection has been caused by an old root canal, there is a chance that we can re-treat it and get rid of the infection.
Alternatively, surgical tooth extraction may be the best option to prevent recurring infections.
Finally, if the tooth is otherwise healthy, we may prescribe a course of antibiotics which should eradicate any infection.
